Join us for the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway Duathlon

This exciting event offers participants the chance to experience the beauty of the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway with a 2-mile run, a 12-mile bike ride, and another 2-mile run. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or a first-time competitor, this USA Triathlon-sanctioned event is perfect for anyone looking to challenge themselves while enjoying the scenic landscapes of upstate New York.
Duathlon Overview
The race begins at Riverview Orchards, where you’ll transition between running and biking amidst the fall colors and picturesque views of the Mohawk River and Erie Canal. You’ll receive a special commemorative item as one of the first 150 registrants.
The route includes the notable Byway sites of Riverview Orchards, the Hamlet of Vischer Ferry Historic District, the Vischer Ferry General Store, and Visher Ferry Natural and Historic Preserve.

Race Details
When:
- Sunday, October 20, 2024, 8:30 a.m. EDT – 12:00 p.m. EDT
Where:
- Riverview Orchards, 660 Riverview Road, Rexford, NY 12148 for the start, bike transition, finish and awards ceremony.
Entry Fees:
- Open to Individuals and Relay Teams of all ages.
- The Individual Entry fee is $65.10 through October 4th, $70.53 through October 16th, and $81.38 on the day of the event.
- The Relay Team entry fee is $62.93 through October 4th, $65.10 through October 16th, and $75.95 on the day of the event.
- Note: This is a USA Triathlon-sanctioned event. Event prices do not include one-day membership, if applicable.
2-Mile Run Course Details
Feel free to tour the duathlon course before the race! The courses will have fresh pavement markings. The running leg starts at Riverview Orchard’s business sign. Follow the red pavement marking at the Droms Road intersection and the turn-around point on Droms Road. The same course will be repeated after the bike.
Volunteers will be stationed at the intersections on race day, but please note that it is the athlete’s responsibility to know the course.
12-Mile Bike Course Details
Cyclists leave the transition area and travel about 6 miles on Riverview Road. There will be a turn around at 64 Riverview Road. Volunteers will be stopping traffic. You will come back Riverview Road to the transition area at Riverview Orchards. Please note that while there is some brand new pavement on Riverview Road there are also a few rough patches on the way out. These will be marked with chalk paint on race day. Please stay to the right when possible. When road conditions do not allow please ride safely. We ask that everyone say ‘on your left’ when passing to ensure a safe course.
Note: The roads are not closed to traffic.
Additional Information
- The first 150 registrants receive a commemorative item!
- Awards for Individuals include overall male and female winners and first, second, and third-place finishes in each 10-year age group, starting with age 19 and under.
- Awards for Relay Two-Person teams include First-Place male, female, and mixed teams.

Proceeds from this event benefit the Friends of the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit membership organization that serves as a bridge to local communities by increasing awareness, enjoyment and linkage of the wide variety of scenic, recreational and historic resources along the Mohawk River and Erie Canal corridor from Waterford to Schenectady.
The duathlon showcases the area’s beautiful fall foliage, the history, heritage, and culture of the canals of the waterway, and the role our communities played in the Industrial Revolution. It demonstrates the connectivity between recreation areas and communities and between waterways and land trails.
