Mohawk Towpath
36-mile towpath, namesake of the Mohawk Towpath Scenic Byway runs alongside the historic route of the Erie Canal between Waterford/Cohoes and Schenectady.
Along the way, view Cohoes Falls, the Flight of Locks and detour through Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve. Entrances to the Mohawk Towpath at Rexford and Clifton Park.
Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve
4.5 miles of hiking trails within the 700 acres. Multiple access points include the Whipple Bridge, Clute’s Dry Dock, Ferry Drive Gateway, and the Sugar Hill Road Extension. Remnants of the Erie Canal are scattered throughout the Preserve. Whipple Bridge Entrance located across from the intersection of Riverview Road and Van Vranken Road. Clute’s Dry Dock Entrance one mile east of Whipple Bridge. Ferry Drive Entrance across from Vischer Ferry General Store ends at the Towpath Connector Trail. Sugar Hill Road Extension/Vischer Ferry Power Dam reached from Riverview Road to Sugar Hill Road and Lock 7 Dam Overlook.
Peebles Island State Park
2.3-mile perimeter trail follows the water’s edge around Peebles Island, featuring views from the cliffs, meanders through meadows, the rapids at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, and the possibility of spotting local wildlife. One Delaware Avenue, Waterford, NY 12188
Mohawk River State Park
Adjoining Lock 7 Park, miles of trails cross grassy fields, hilly hemlock and white pine stands, and hardwoods. Trailhead access at the end of Whitmyer Road, from Blatnick Park behind the dog park, Rosendale Rad opposite Agostino Avenue and from the bike path leaving from Lock7 Road. Black on orange arrows mark a continuous 7.5-mile loop that can start and finish at any trailhead. A short section of this loop in the northern gorges area is two-way.
Mohawk Landing
A trail through the 6 acre property follows the riverfront to the overlook and loops through the wetland area with two streams. 640 Riverview Road, Rexford, NY
Mohawk Hudson Bike-Hike Trail
A 40-mile continuous path that starts in Pattersonville, west of Albany, and follows the Mohawk River east to the confluence with the Hudson River. Two sections of the trail include the Albany to Cohoes segment and Cohoes to Rotterdam Junction segment.
